What do you think about using "tough love" for an out-of-control teen?

More facts would be needed to say accurately. However, I would
never put a teenager out of the house. He/she will find somewhere else
to live, and it would probably be a place that you would not approve
of. If it involves taking privileges or a car away, that is fine
and may do the trick. If you need help with drug abuse, there are so
many experts to consult. It sounds like you may need outside
intervention regardless of the problem. An "out-of-control" teen is
usually rebelling against something. Try to find the trigger and see
if anything can be done to diffuse the teen's anger. Good luck;)

If you are talking about strict rules, with stated punishments for violations, then yes. I mean, if your son knows that missing curfew means he's grounded for a week, and you stick to it (neither parent relents) then yes. This punishment should be accompanied by something that fixes what was done wrong - the punishment for skipping one's chores might also include doing the chores of one's siblings in addition to one's own, or an absence of allowance.


But if tough love means phsyical punishment, I don't think that's particularly effective on older kids. I remember once I was 15 and had an argument with my mom (I had failed to clean the paint brushes adequately after painting the back fence). So while I was standing at the sink re-washing the brushes, my mom tried spanking me. ARAY koh PO T_T
